#Goodwilldatenight

Image may contain: 4 people, people smiling, people standing

Well since our facebook post has gone viral I figured now was an appropriate time to detail our date night a little more.

Shane and I try very hard to be intentional with date nights.  We have a baby girl and it is so easy to get wrapped up in her and her cuteness.  So, in an effort to keep our marriage first, we try to go on a date night one night a week.  And we try to make them fun!

Shane heard of another couple who went to Goodwill and picked outfits for their date nights and so we just had to do it.  To most people’s surprise, the whole date night was Shane’s idea.  But, we are very competitive so we had to add some rules to it.

Rule One: You each get $10 in Goodwill to shop for the other person and they have to wear what you pick.  This was so much fun.  We found some crazy stuff in Goodwill and made each other try on outfits until we found the perfect one.  This cued the insane laughter from the start of the date night.  My husband is absolutely goofy so as you can imagine I tried on some CRAZY outfits.  We ended up only spending $13 for both masterpieces.

Rule Two: Once you leave Goodwill, it’s like fight club, no one talks about it.  We had to resume date night as normal and pretend like we had no idea our outfits were off the wall.  We went to Longhorn for dinner so of course we had to wait for a table.  The minute we got out of the car we had to put on our game faces.  People were snickering as they walked by and we got a lot of side eye from the hostess.  Again, to most people’s surprise, NO ONE said a word to us about our outfits.  Everyone just looked and laughed behind our backs I’m sure.

Rule Three: You have to pick fake names and go by them all evening.  This didn’t start as a rule but after we saw the outfits we knew it had to happen.  When I walked out of the dressing room Shane said “Ethel get your choir book and come on” and from that point on I was stuck with Ethel.  And really, who wears more plaid than a “Roger” which I affectionately shortened to “Rog” in front of our waiter.

Y’all I don’t think we have laughed this hard in a long time.  Marriage is tough, parenting is tough, and honestly life is tough.  But everything is better when you’re doing it with your best friend.  So, have fun and make sure you hashtag all of your pictures with #goodwilldatenight so we can laugh at your pictures too!

***Disclaimer- to all of the people posting that Shane and I are “goals”, thanks.  But, we are both very off the wall, sinful people.  We only have a great marriage because we put our relationship with Jesus Christ first and let Him tell us how to live and love.  Without Him loving us and showing us how to love each other we would be nothing!

  1. this is great. My husband and i always had a date night when the kids were small and 26 years later we're empty nesters and we still have fun except now every night is date night :-) Keep God first, your spouse second and all will work out.

    2. Between adults wearing pj s when going out to the supermarket and the mall, I lean toward cutting back on bazzar outfits. We have a younger generation watching what we do. I told my daughter to get dressed or she was'nt going with me to the store. I dont care that everybody does it. The Salvation Army/Walmart look is more normal now a days. Lets try the normal look for a while...lol

    3. This a wonderful idea but Goodwill ceo pocket more of the money they get in sales then help the communities so I would pick a thrift stores that does help the communities not the CEOS

    4. That is what I believe also. I hear so much about friends that shop at salvation army stores and how the are just looking for cheap and how they don't respect themselves. I just laugh an tell them that the outfit I wear is from salvation army. I respect myself and my community more than those who shop at the outlet stores. I get the same clothes for a fraction of the cost and better than half of that cost goes to the community. I do better though, when I see church auction, rummage sales or yard sales. The churches usually use the money for a project such as a roof or whatever but if they acceded their goal, almost all is given back to the people who are in need. I am all for date night and can always do better than the goodwill stores.

    5. The whole point is Goodwill is probably where they also could afford to pick each others cloths. This was not making fun at people who shop there and by no means we're they being rude towards anything! This whole post is about having fun and enjoying life. This is a couple who wakes up every morning putting the Good Lord first. Take the negative comments and go elsewhere. Wow people really turning this in to something negative and that my Friends is what's wrong with the World today. Always turning something fun and good in to something negative!!!

    6. I can't believe there is a debate on which store/thrift store they should buy the outfits at this was about having a blast and keeping fun in their marriage, maybe next time they can message you and you can pick out the place where they buy their silly outfits in fun and you can pay for them, what is this world coming to. This wasn't a political debate wow, there always has to be someone who is self righteous ruining the fun. Get a life.

  3. And then you give glory to God. I really, really admire that and living in that way. I've fallen away from living my life in that way and of all the things I am taking away from this post, the disclaimer at the end is at the top of my list.

We are so doing this for a date night. Thanks! My question is - did you wash it all first or just go with it?!

    1. I must be the only person reading this who thinks it is sad to do. So many people can only afford to shop at Goodwill and that is what they must wear everyday - not as a joke about being "pitiful" and "poor", so someone would buy their dinner. I see no fun or humor in this. It mocks the very people you should be helping. It's just sad.

      Delete
    2. Maybe sad; probably not. People who shop at Goodwill can find lovely outfits that coordinate and are totally acceptable to the everyday fashion sense that seems to be required in our society. It is my understanding that Shane and Noel deliberately chose the clothing they did because it resonated with an alternate identity that they had fun with on their date night. It's like acting or role play. Perhaps their joke about someone buying their dinner was not entirely appropriate, but how many thousands of people would have joked in a similar way? Forgive, and support Goodwill. It helps clothe people and provides useful household goods, as well as books, toys, and tools. Plus, it can make your date night a truly bonding experience! :-)

    3. There is no shame in shopping at Goodwill. One of my favorite places to shop for clothes actually, even though I can certainly afford not to. What you seem to be implying is that everything in there is off the wall and hideous. It certainly isn't. If someone is buying this stuff, they are doing it purely by choice, not by necessity.

      Delete
    4. They didn't imply that everything at Goodwill was hideous. They specifically went searching for something out of the social fashion norm. What's wrong with having some crazy fun like dressing your partner up in an outfit that they normally would never wear in public? I buy my son's school clothes at Salvation Army and Goodwill because it makes it easier to afford his marching band and other extra curricular activities, but I take him with me so he can pick out what he likes because let's face it, everything at 2nd hand stores are not fashionably up to date lol. I find it sad, or a shame, that people would pick sort their fun night out and make it into something negative!

    5. Sharon.

This is funny because they chose what they felt were the worst outfits available from their perspective.

Goodwill and other thrift or charity stores, have more than enough clothing of various styles, including plenty of current trends.

My sister chooses to shop at such places and receives compliments on her selections often.

You wouldn't know if someone was wearing an outfit bought at a thrift store, or a department store.

Yes there are also some outdated or less "fashionable" items, like these 2 chose for their date night, but guess what people still like and purchase such items.

Perhaps it's in a little poor taste to "make fun" of those with unique fashion sense, who might actually like the "date night" outfits, and choose to wear that style of items often.
But it is not making fun of those who can only afford to shop at Goodwiil, because sometimes their prices can be more than a new item at Walmart, or a sale item in the mall.

Many who shop thrift stores, do so out of choice, not necessity. And those who do out of necessity, do not have to end up with outdated or unfashionable clothing. The selection is wide and varied.

    6. I used to work in a Goodwill. They specifically choose items of all varieties because as others have stated, you can get some nice finds there (sometimes with the price tag still on!)...older upper class women in my town go there all the time...it's like going rummaging. Also, the biggest day if the year is Halloween...it's like other stores' Black Friday. Goodwill purposefully keeps clothes like this in stock because they know that a large chunk of their customers are looking to dress for some kind of theme. We once shopped there for an 80's birthday party in March. We looked amazing! I had sky high shoulder pads and hair to match and my husband looked like Marty McFly!

    8. My boss does most of his shopping at a goodwill and he is one of the most fashionable men I know. I have found really fabulous finds at thrift stores, garage sales, and consignment shops as well. In fact, most of my clothing is second hand.
It is true that stores like goodwill rely on the people who live around the store for the clothes they donate, so no store is the same. But they most definitely have enough variety. These outfits are most definitely ridiculous and no one would HAVE to buy clothes like this because of price

    12. Oh My GOSH!!! People! Stop the criticisms! Why can't you just take the good from this article? Here is a couple who, in a world of madness, divorce, bad marriages, etc... is sharing how they are honoring and choosing each other and having some fun while doing it! I seriously doubt at any time that Noel thought her article would be picked apart because they shopped at Goodwill! For all we know, they may buy a lot of clothing there and have seen all the junky, old crazy stuff that's right there with the good stuff. Please... stop nit-picking... see the good...and if you don't have something nice to say.... don't say it! Our world is already jam-packed with negativity; embrace the spirit of this article and let your offense GO!!!!

    13. Yeah, this actually had me torn. I absolutely loved the intent behind it. Like I legit see the fun in this for couples. But reading it, my heart kinda broke for folk that stretch their savings at Goodwill like I did (and that was just as a Grad student). So when I do the challenge, I think I'll broaden the bounds a little bit and leave it at "pick your partners clothes with $10". That way Goodwill kinda be my way of being resourceful along with other places: consignment shops, Spencers (the clearance rack!)...Hot Topic anyone?!

      Delete
    14. I think they went to Goodwill because it has variety and costs less. Certainly, I have seen some bizarre looking clothes at Macy's, Nordstroms. Every clothing store has something that would fit the bill for the "weird" outfit goal...Goodwill just fit the monetary goal that they also wanted.

  9. Oh goodness gracious... you are both beautiful, perfect human specimens on a journey that you are creating the most enjoyment possible out of. Even Jesus would admonish you for shining the light of focus upon your "faults and failings", rather than how perfectly you were created. There is no need to divert the praise you are receiving for being transparent, and attempting to help others to insert some fun into their relationships. Humble is one thing... but, remember how fearfully and wonderfully you are made. Its not necessary to suppress that to have humility. Much Love.

  14. I have a sense of humor. However, I try to not use humor to degrade other people. If my husband and I have a night out, we go out for a private and quiet dinner at a favorite restaurant that's not kid-friendly, for a change. We go to talk, laugh and enjoy each other as adults. We're grateful to God have the means to do so and recognize that many aren't as fortunate. This is mean and demeaning to people who have no other choice but to shop at a place like Goodwill. No way around that.

    1. They were not in any way making fun of people who shop at Goodwill. They were looking for cheap clothes that they could mismatch and have fun in. I'd bet they turned around and donated them back to Goodwill.

    3. I think Rebecca has a valid point. It is mean spirited to make fun of people who you think are "simpler" or less "sophisticated' than you. Like people with "those out of style names" I don't think they were intentionally being mean. Should I ask my friend roger? Or my church lady friends? It is harmless enough, I guess. But it is kind of mean to make fun of people or the clothes they wear. And by doing this, you seem to be doing that. I'm not upset, just wonder if it's nice. That's entirely up to you to decide. God bless you!

      Delete
    4. It's not meant to degrade. It's not meant to be anything but fun with the one you love. If other people see an issue then maybe they have the issue. The intent it not malicious. Life needs more laughter!

      Delete
    5. I completely agree with Rebecca. It's disrespectful. What I read from this is "Lets dress like poor people and make up poor people names. Won't that be funny?"

Disrespectful. No two ways about it.

      Delete
    6. I didn't get disrespect out of this at all... they did not at any one time make fun of anyone but themselves..... way to read way to much out of it and suck the fun out....Party poopers!!

    7. Don't be a hater. God loves for us to laugh at ourselves and have a great time! They weren't laughing at others.

    8. What's the difference if they go out in costumes? Same idea. Plus, it's doesn't matter what you wear in public. Be it in suits or raggedy clothing, someone / somewhere out there will talk about what you're wearing.

I'm glad you guys had a great time. There's always someone out there that has to make anything positive turn into a negative. Sad world. I'm happy for you! Keep it up.

    9. Sounds like the two of you like to have alot of fun together...humor is a must, in any relationship. There are many people that shop at Goodwill for costumes...Halloween, Costume parties, Themed parties....It's not anybodies business, why your shopping there. Keep the marriage strong, do whatever you neex to do, in order for that to happen....My daughter has gone out with her boyfriend at places they've never been, and pretend they're inbred cousins from the hills, and they pick funny names for each other....People are amazed that they would admit to something like that......but they're very interested, and buy them free drinks...they do tell the people after awhile...and everyone has a good laugh.....

      Delete
    10. I don't believe it was demeaning to anyone anywhere. It was all for laughs, and it helped them to enjoy themselves on date night and be able to laugh like they may never get to otherwise. It's nice to be spontaneous once in a while. Maybe you should try it sometime.

      Delete
    11. I don't see how people think that they in any way they were down grading anyone. They actually helped people out by shopping at the goodwill. People need to lighten up.

      Delete
    12. I couldn't disagree more with the people who say it's mean and disrespectful. I shop at Goodwill...for both things I want to actually wear and things I wouldn't normally be caught dead in for costume purposes. We all have different tastes and preferences and I look back at some of the things I wore and I just have to laugh. In no way is this making fun of people who shop at Goodwill. It's just a place where everyone knows they can find cheap clothes that someone no longer likes to wear. I think this was a SPECTACULAR idea and can't wait to try it out for myself!

      Delete
    13. Count me with the people who find this sad. Someone donated those clothes for others to use, and you're old enough to have fun that doesn't come at the expense of others.

      Delete
    14. No, by reading their story you can see they aren't the kind of people who would do something like that in any way. Good will has a lot of great clothes, fashionable clothes, and anyone can shop there, and usually find something they like. There are even some great brand name clothes. But Good Will also has alot of older, faded, more retro clothing, or perhaps clothes their parents wore when they were growing up, I think the people who are unable to see the lighthearted-ness of this post, must be rather boring people...be silly for once. Have a little fun, not at the expense of others, (just like these good people did not) dress up in older faded clothing that might look terrible on you, and hopefully the person who donated it would understand and be glad you were able to create some great and funny memories in their hand me downs, and also get a laugh because they see the humor in it;)

      Delete
    15. I do not find the humor in a joke at the expense of someone else. I was sad to see that they are Christian and behaving this way. It also made me sad that they noticed people staring and laughing and thought it was ok and funny instead of being troubled that people can be so hurtful to others. On the next date night are they going as people of Walmart, or maybe as a disabled couple. Wouldn't that be a riot?!

      Delete
    16. I think some of you really need to go to your local Goodwill and realize that time ps have changed! When I was a kid, yes...it was considered an insult if somebody said your clothes came from Goodwill, or Goodwill was considered a store that helped those who were less fortunate financially be able to buy clothes for a reasonable price. It is no longer like this people! And to shake your finger at others while not realizing this is showing ignorance. Goodwill is now used by people of all financial backgrounds for a variety of reasons. One of the biggest reasons is to buy costumes. Their biggest day if the year is Halloween and they use that to their advantage because that money is helping people get jobs who may have a hard time doing so. Do you shake your finger at people on Halloween if you suspect they went to Goodwill? But honestly, there are other reasons why one would need a costume when it's not Halloween: themed birthdays and spirit week in schools come to mind. Please change your thinking because by holding on to this belief that Goodwill is meant for those without money, you are actually the ones who are degrading them.

I've actually gotten some of my store inventory from Goodwill, so it isn't just for "poor people". It's actually COOL to be a thrifter in THIS day and age so some of you are placing a stigma where it doesn't actually exist.

    19. Wow it was done in fun I know people who d ont have to shop there but do because of the finds. They didn't belittle anyone or anything and just because they said we wondered if someone would offer to pay the bill at longhorns I found it funny just because it was offered I don't feel they would have said Yes! Do you people know how the CEO of goodwill lines his pockets? This is a place I for one would never shop because they could give back a lot more being all the items are given to them. I like to give to people I see in need or churches that really help. Stop being mean to this fun loving couple for having a little fun!

    20. The GoodWill store is not just for poor people. Honestly, the prices they charge are outrageous and you can buy brand new clothes for about the same price if you shop the sales. It was started for people who work there to rehabilitate their life. Shopping at GoodWill is not reserved just for one social status in life. Wearing out of date or mismatch clothes was a choice to poke fun of themselves and not at others. Just because you are poor doesn't mean you have to buy out of date clothes or wear them mis matched. There are plenty of modern clothing choices at thrift stores. Also people go to the Goodwill to buy particular clothing choices for Halloween costumes all the time and the thrift shops advertise for that particular purpose every October. What's the difference? They purchased themselves a costume and wore it out.

    21. How is this mean? There having fun and enjoying themselves. People seriously grow up. In no way shape or form are they trying to say goodwill is only for the poor. They simply stated 10$ a price to make it fun and they picked out funny outfits to make the Date fun and interesting. People have no sense of humor and lack what real love and fun is. Always thinking negative. I would much rather hang with these fun loving God seeking folks than rude people missing the point on having fun! Nowhere in there post did it say poor people shop at Goodwill nor did it make fun of anyone. They simply set a 10$ limit to make it more fun! Lol on you folks turning this post in to anything but fun!!! Laughs on you miserable folks!

  15. Rebecca, it wasn't the point that Goodwill is a bad place, the point was to find clothes that weren't expensive, that wasn't their style, and try to make it as outlandish as possible. 16. I think you missed the point Rebecca. It isn't about where the clothes came from, it is about the silliness of wearing outrageous costumes, acting like it is normal, and having a secret all your own. I have the means not to and still shop at goodwill. This isn't degrading at all.

  17. It's called "thinking outside of the box" I don't see that this is demeaning at all. They could have gone to a department store and done the same thing. All walks of life shop at goodwill. It is all about having fun.

  20. Thank you for your opinions. I still stand by mine. If you have other means, but choose to shop at Goodwill, good for you. However, most Goodwill shoppers aren't doing so by choice. I'm all for having fun, but there are other ways to enjoy yourselves. This couple seems to be fairly new in their marriage. My husband and I are about to celebrate 3 children and 18 years of marriage. Our marriage is far from perfect, but part of what makes it work is that he's the one human being that I can tell anything to and be completely myself. That might initially cause a conflict and we certainly have to compromise a lot, but it's real and honest. No alter egos needed, except on Halloween. ;) We certainly laugh a lot too, and there are definitely times when we feel the need to "spice" up things. However, we do it privately and without theatrics. Each to his own definitely, but it wouldn't be fun for us to do something that has the potential to hurt those in need. Maybe call the date night something other than the name of a store that traditionallly serves the poor? Respectfully and thank you for listening.

    1. I think it's rather presumptuous to state that "most Goodwill shoppers aren't doing so by choice". I don't find that to be true in my experience (as a Goodwill shopper) at all. In fact, I find it to be a bit "degrading" of you to say.

    2. Here's a thought, you find the hashtag #goodwilldatenight demeaning and potentially hurtful but right now, this story has gone viral - and people love the idea! Where you see negative, I instead see a positive to the hashtag. It's essentially free promotion for Goodwill. As people plan their date nights, spend their money at Goodwill buying outfits (whether they need to as a necessity or not), and then photograph and post the results across social media platforms the brand and the programs it offers to those in need benefit greatly by the influx in revenue.

    5. Yall are being too sensitive. I see people in Good Will that don't have to shop there ALL of the time. It's fun. I don't have to shop there, but enjoy it. I know MANY, MANY others that do, just to see if they can save a few bucks. And honestly, Goodwill is not much different I'm price on clearance racks walmart, or old navy, or TJ Maxx or Marshall or Ross Dress for Less on some items. I can get new cotton shorts at walmart for $5. At Good will shorts are close to the same price.
Quit being so sensitive. They aren't making fun of anyone. They are role playing. I mean, would it upset you if they shopped the clearance racks and Macy's for formal wear, made up fake names and went out on a date night? Same thing. Lighten up.

    6. I understand the opinions but you're missing the point. Good Will isn't the subject here. It's the young Christian couple with a child that has given every couple a fresh idea of how to keep a marriage light-hearted and fun. This is a refreshing break from what could be happening. Bless your heart! I enjoyed this story so much!

    7. As a low-income mother who frequently buys my clothes and my kids' clothes at thrift stores and goodwill...I am totally fine with this couple and their date night idea. I'm not gonna be picking the hideous things they picked! And A LOT of hideous stuff gets donated, in addition to things that are damaged and worn-out. If they wanna come and grab that stuff up and have fun with it so I have less sifting to do, let them do it!! Saves me some time.

    8. Rebecca....why is it ok for you to do it on Halloween?? What if you offend someone on Halloween with your outfit?? Or what if you offend someone who doesn't believe in celebrating Halloween???

    9. Rebecca, have you been doing polls or something to reach your conclusion that most people who shop at goodwill aren't doing so by choice??? Where do you get your info? I shop at goodwill all the time, and a whole town full of prosperous people who live in my prosperous town do the same. I rarely see anyone in my local goodwill who looks like they could not afford to shop at somewhere considered upscale. Those you seem to think have no "choice" to shop there usually go to places where clothes are actually donated to them at no charge, or don't shop at all. I do not know where you are getting your info, since you claim not to shop at goodwill anyway.

    10. Rebecca that's pretty rude of you to say! I shop at Goodwill very much by choice. It serves more than just the poor. It don't matter if your married eighteen years or eight days. It's all about loving the right person and if they choose to set a 10$ limit and pick each others outfits from Goodwill and pick names and have fun. How is that hurting anyone? My husband and I pretend often. What's Hollywood made of? I think it's fun myself to pretend at time's it kinda fun. It doesn't mean I'm fake or that me and my husband are mean people. You keep your opinion and will keep the one's we have. Maybe you need a Date night or maybe your not as happy as you pretend to be!!!

    12. They paid money for something at a Goodwill shop like anyone else that shops there. I never have seen a sign or anyone saying you have to be poor to shop at Goodwill.
The fact that you are making an issue of this is far more demeaning to those who shop at Goodwill out of necessity than anything this couple has done.

  22. Some people shop at goodwill for themselves and get good deals. It is a known fact also that people shop there for a costume or add to a costume, and probably that is clothes they would otherwise not sell. The same reason people donate out of date clothes they have been hanging on to. Pieces none of us would otherwise not be able to find. Halloween, 50's dances etc. People need to lighten up. It was a date to dress up FUN.

Because even though God has blessed me with enough that I don't HAVE to shop there, I feel no need to waste what he has give me, when many of the clothes at Goodwill are BRAND NEW, still have store tags on them, and are WAY cheaper. Who doesn't love a bagain? This is a GREAT idea and God bless you for sharing it!

  28. I have shopped at Goodwill many times. In fact 2 of my daughter's prom dresses came from Goodwill. It was just I wanted to be a good steward of the $ God has blessed me with. It is not the "making fun of" it was just HAVING FUN! Of course we are all sinful being. It by the grace of God, we are redeemed.
I read this article...and if you're getting "mad" over some trivial things, then perhaps check your own heart. This article made me stop and think also:

  31. Rebecca, I am sorry but I find your comments to be very judgemental for a Christian. This is the reason I stopped going to church many, many years ago. I now have a boyfriend who is an ordained minister and is a chaplain and we have had many discussions about how judgemental people can be. He would love to do something like this if he physically could. He also happens to be a paraplegic with additional medical issues and it is not possible for him to be able to try on clothes to do this. He has a wonderful sense of humor and would love the creativity in this! Also, I think coming up with alternate names is fantastic! And sjould I mention that not all Ethel's are "church" people as are all Rogers. Lest we not forget about Ethel on I Love Lucy, Ethel Mermon or Ethel Kennedy plus all of the famour Rogers. And as others have said, there are tons of reasons as to why people shop Goodwill. I absolutely love the creativity and fun of this date night. It is all about letting go and just enjoying each others company and the love shared between two people. Way to go!

And to manage to have fun well that is a bonus for them and everyone in the store at the time as most people want to and are eagar to help!!!I think it woould be great for groups to do!

    3. I really wish I would have seen this 5 or 6 months ago. I love making costumes out of the cheapest things I can find and my husband would wear anything I made. He was such a good sport, even dressed up as a female (Lily Munster). This is such a great idea for couples! Fun is fun. Some people need to stop being to sensitive about things that don't actually concern them. If you don't want to do something like this, don't. It's that simple. But don't rain on the parades of people who do want to do it. If you and your significant other are happy sitting on the couch, then do that. I won't judge you. Goodwill itself really wasn't the main part of their story. Having fun together was. If she had said, "we dressed each other in outrageous costumes" instead of "outfits" would you be less offended? I would have loved to do this with my husband, can't believe I didn't think of it. He would have loved it. He passed away suddenly in March of this year. I can only imagine what 'creation' he would have come up for me to wear if I let him loose in a thrift store! lol

    2. Oh goodness...speaking as somebody who has been ,arrived a modest 8 years, together 16 and has two beautiful girls...it's about balance and there is nothing wrong with having a date night! I wish my hisband and I could do it more often, but life gets busy an sometimes it is hard to find a sitter. Keep in mind that by taking this time with your spouse, it teaches your children to value all part of the family as well as taking time for themselves someday. Some day they will one day be spouses and I'm sure you would want them to have a healthy relationship with their spouses. Also, it makes you better parents because parenting and the day to day is HARD and it can be easy to get wrapped up in it. Your children are watching how you act with each other and although a little bit of bickering is completely normal...losing your marital/spousal identity for the sake of your children is not going to help them in the long run. That puts a strain on the relationship that they can see.Date nights are necessary.

  40. The business goal of Goodwill is actually to help provide training and jobs for people with disabilities, so when I choose to shop there (whether my finances would allow me to shop other places or not), I feel happy in doing so because Goodwill helps others. I can't for the life of me understand why what this couple did would be considered offensive, nor do I understand why people wouldn't try to purchase things frugally!

    1. That would be fun !!! I, personally, randomly shop at thrift stores, my daughter and I love to go together and we have found some great things that we love, not because we have to, but because we want to, and we like to "dig for treasures", as in find something very nice and very cool for a very reasonable price. I think what "Rog and Ethel" did was done out of fun, that they were not making fun of or looking down on or casting attitude on anyone that finds themselves having to shop at Thrift Stores for their clothing and needs. I think they were just stepping out of their comfort zone, much the same as those of us who may have gone to Wal-Mart in fleece jammies -- is that making fun of someone who has nothing else to wear ??? I think not. It's having fun, much the same as dressing up for Halloween or some other costume party. Why spoil someone else's fun ??? If you don't like the idea, move on .... don't be negative Nancy and assume just because you have a problem with it that the rest of the world does, or should, too. Just my two cents.

Sounds like this couple was actually the made fun of or laughed at just because of what they were wearing while spending sweet moments celebrating their love of Christ and their sweet beautiful baby girl at home... they did not pick these outfits in mean spirits, for they picked them mismatching in fun.. and then you got the mean old hypocrites who are judging or accusing this couple of means and unsociable acts when all they were really trying to do was strengthen their bond and healthy marriage, in fun ways.

They are the victims you speak of!

    2. Hi, I'm a poor person who shops at thrift stores. I don't want to wear ugly clothes. Shocking I know, poor people have preferences! They can definitely have them. It's less for me to have to sift through to find something decent.

    3. Bella, you do realize they are not taking away from anyone, but helping others, right?! Goodwill provides jobs, job training and other services for those in need. People donate items to Goodwill which they sell in the store. The profit from the store is what funds their charity. Perhaps you should understand how something works before you criticize someone.

To all the other negative comments, calm down. Clearly this couple was sharing a fun, affordable way to do something new and exciting. This in turn helps others (see first half of my comment.) They are making fun of themselves and the silly items they paired together, not poor people of Goodwill.

  59. When my older kids were teens, they would go to Goodwill with their friends and find outrageous outfits and wear them to Walmart to shop. The one rule (created by the parents of these teens) was that they had to buy something at Walmart if they were using it to parade their wardrobe choices. For my son's 18th bday, the guys of the group dug into their stash of weird clothing and went "Walmart Shopping" together--best surprise birthday party. lol

People who are going to use this idea are definitely not taking anything from those who are shopping for serious clothing. And, honestly, when I am trying to shop on a tight budget, Goodwill is the LAST store I shop at because it's expensive in comparison to others (and often in comparison to the Walmart clearance rack).

    ReplyDelete
  60. This is brilliant!
I shop at thrift shops almost exclusively for clothes. There is nothing like finding $15 cashmere, or that simple black skirt to replace your old one. This date is not poking fun- it is stepping out of your style comfort zone. There are truly clothes at thrift stores that I would never consider putting in my wardrobe, just like in any shop. I wear stuff other people won't be seen in and vice versa. I love that this date is thinking out of the box. good for you! I dare you to wear a bridesmaid dress next time!

    ReplyDelete
  61. I was going to say the same thing. Obviously you don't shop in goodwill very often if you think it's for poverty stricken people. Walmart is cheaper than goodwill on many items found at both stores! This wasn't meant to make fun of anyone but themselves! They were basically wearing a silly costume and going into a place where costumes aren't worn to be silly and fun on their date night!

  63. I love this! I can't wait for my husband to wake up so I can ask him if he's game. To all the nay sayers who read this and only had mean and negative things to say: My first thought was that they could have gone to the mall and picked out bazaar outfits just as easily but they would've paid a premium for their fun night. They shopped at Goodwill instead, which kept their cost down and paid it forward all at the same time. I never once thought they were poking fun at others. To the person that commented about them giving each other poor people names: How on earth did you form that thought? I have an Aunt ETHEL that happens to be extremely wealthy. Those mean and nasty comments have no merit whatsoever. This wasn't a debate and you could have easily kept those vile thoughts to yourself. Ethel & Rog, you guys are an inspiration and seem to have a very fun loving relationship. God bless you both (and your fiery little red ;))

  64. As a person who has shopped at Goodwill out of necessity growing up and now by choice, I think there is absolutely nothing wrong with this idea. This couple isn't making fun of poor people or Goodwill. They were just being silly and joking about fashion. They could have just as easily bought clothes at a high end store, but obviously didn't want to spend much money on their date night idea (which makes sense).
The idea that this going viral will drain Goodwill of clothing or take clothing away from poor people is laughable. Goodwill has an insane amount of clothes. They are also a nonprofit and money spent there will help others. Everyone has a right to shop there and I see all kinds of different people there. As others have written, it is a great place to find costumes (silly or otherwise), but it is also a great place to find nice clothes too. We are a disposable society, so I love a place that saves people money and recycles used items (instead of them ending up in a landfill).
I don't see any reason at all to call out this couple. What they did didn't hurt anyone. Actually, they shared an idea that might bring a smile to a lot of people.

  72. I am married for a second time.
In marriage, two people do what they need to do in order to keep their primary relationship vibrant and alive. This enables them to function as a pair, working towards a common goal.
I raised twins alone until I met my current hubby, and worked very hard to juggle a home, a job, two children and two parents.
I was with husband #1 for 14 years, married 10 when he walked out.
I enjoyed getting dressed up and going out when times were good...It was seven years before I had that luxury again.
Now, with my children gone (one is married himself) hubby and I do set aside a night where we go out. We never know where until we get there. We do not think of or talk about jobs or kids, or his parents (who have reverted back to childhood as 80-somethings).
God bless you if you are fortunate enough to have someone to share raising your children with. There is nothing worse than having a spouse bail when you are raising three month old twins. Even if you are alone, find some time to breathe and clear your mind.
Mom always told me that "The Lord gives you what He knows you can handle." I figure that prayer and hard work is what got me through to this time in my life.
Hats off to you young couples who are sticking together and making it work.
The Goodwill thing isn't to my liking, though. To me, "date" means dressed up and looking/smelling/feeling my very best. My hubby is Italian, and he always cleans up well.

This post made me laugh and laughter is good medicine. I am only 2 weeks from my oldest son passing. I can see my husband and I doing this and if you knew my husband he would totally be on board for this. He used to have to wear a tie everyday and even though he has tons of expensive ties, I shopped at good will for outrageous ties for him. He loved going to work and making the men in his office laugh every day. What harm is there in taking clothing someone has donated that they no longer wish to take up space in their closet and make it available for someone to purchase regardless of the purpose they choose to use it for. As far as using the out dated names. I love that too. I know of lots of comedy's and movies where names are used for a character to bring fun and laughter. My name is Patty Sue, I was born in Texas and someone once told me they knew I was from Texas because everyone from Texas has two first names. We all know that is not true. Just a perceived idea. I was not offended. I like my name. People we all need more fun and laughter in our lives. The word of our Father says Laughter is good medicine, if you were sitting in my shoes right now, laughter is the best thing. It brings joy and healing into our lives.

  76. People are way out of their element with many of these comments. Where I live, Goodwill has a variety of items available. Some including expensive antiques - that I snatch up and resell online. I.e. A set of Limoges porcelain. Does that make me a bad person? I think not. People use goodwill in a variety of ways, but I have come to discover that it is the place most people clearing out their old belongings or unwanted items "drop and dump" them. Purchasing items at goodwill helps their cause, regardless of what you do with the items you purchased. Anyone passing judgement here should realize that they could have went to a big corporate chain store, such as WalMart, to find a silly outfit (because they certainly exist at THERE!) instead of giving money to a place that does job training and helps their communities. People need to stop judging, look at the intentions involved here, have a sense of humor and LIGHTEN UP.

  78. Amen! Rock it Ethel and Rog! Definitely going to get an ab workout with my hubby when we do this from laughing so much! 😂 Bless you both...as parents of 2 little rascals, we understand!

  79. Opinions are like butts, everyone has them and most stink. (Cleaned it up a bit from the original phrase)

To those saying how degrading to the poor this is, my husband and I support our family of 4 off $1,300 a month and our bills far exceed that. So I would be one of those poor that you're so worried of offending... I think this date idea is awesome!!!

They are not making fun of anyone but themselves, they found inexpensive goofy clothes (how many of you would be condemning them for excess if they'd found their goofy, only wear once, outfits at Macy's??), and the names they chose are fitting with their clothes. She wore an old fashioned dress, how many Ethel's do you know (aside from one who commented here earlier)?? As for Roger and the plaid pants, I may be misremembering but i think there was a comic strip where the hubby was a Roger and wore pants such as those.

No, what appalls me is the judgmental remarks of you all! Oh the irony of being a judgmental prig when telling someone how exactly they are being offensive to a class of people they themselves do not belong to.

What is it Jesus said about specks and logs?? May wanna look that up again for a refresher.

I'll leave you with this quote I learned from a D.C. Talk song: The single greatest cause of atheism in the world today is Christians who acknowledge Jesus with their lips and walk out the door and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable.

  80. We have a family of 14, including kids, grand kids & in laws. We are so excited to do this when we all get together! We're already laughing...we've been married for 31 years & have always put family first. Thanks for the idea & can't wait to post our pics later. :)

  81. Love this Idea. - I Love Goodwill. Keep Burning those Candles and Don't ever let them burn out, even if you have to light them at both ends!!! Thanks for Sharing your Pictures and Story Ethel!!! :)

  82. I'm sorry, I don't support Goodwill... They make millions off of donated items and pay their employees very little. My support goes to The Salvation Army, The Good Samaritan and New Hope....

On another note, to me this is demeaning to the people who have no choice but to shop at these outlets and I don't think they would find it very funny to be brokered down to a joke. Yeah its funny, but think about the people who are having to do this on a daily basis and probably wish they could get 100$ to go on a shopping spree for a good laugh...

  83. This is a very cool idea. As to people thinking Goodwill is for poor people open your eyes, pay attention to people going in there driving the most expensive cars, wearing clothes that are brand new and are expensive brand names. Plus look at the prices, so called poor people wouldn't be able to afford it there. I went in there the other day found a comforter for $20, they told me it was for looks and brand name. Well the brand name is known for cheap items, and it looked worse than some of their $10 ones. You can go to Wal-Mart and get the whole set for the same price. Would you people freak out if they went to TJ Maxx, Wal-Mart, Target or any other stores like those, probably not, well it's the same thing as going to a thrift store just a little cheaper or the same price. Goodwill has all sorts of fashion choices. This isn't making fun of anyone, it's just having a good time. Is it illegal to have a good time? No it isn't. Before you judge someone else saying I can't believe, they are Christians, well take a good look at yourself. Do you think 'God' will be very happy having Christians being judgmental as shit? No. Before you start being judgmental look at the bible, 'God' wants everyone kind to each other. Clearly we have to revisit what our parents taught us as a little kid, 'If you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything at all.' I'm happy there are people out there with a sense of humour and want to have fun in their marriage.

  85. For those who have been offended by this, I hardly consider Goodwill to be a store for the need. Goodwill prices are typically quite high. I have noticed that I can shop at the local Walmart for less on most items. These two had a great idea and a fun date night.

    1. Then why support them? If their prices are that high and they are getting ALL of their items for free, why would you support them re-selling it for the same prices as WalMart and such? These people are making millions and paying their employees slave wages... Look up how much the CEO/Owner of Goodwill gets each year... its disgusting...

  86. A few years ago I acquired my complete wardrobe for a "Shrove Tuesday" fun event and I won second place. The gift certificate was from a very upscale establishment here in Middle Georgia. I had fun and no one, not anyone went "nuts" about my costume. So my dear friends, I and My Bride had fun and no one was injured.

  87. I admire your thoughtful, fun date night! Unfortunately, we live in a one-size-should-fit-all society when that's completely impossible. You guys made this event about YOU and that's what's important. Of course you will have outside comments making the event about them. I don't care where you go - whether it's the trendiest store at the mall or Good Will. We will always find outfits that are out of character for us. Obviously, you went to Good Will because who wants to spend money on a brand new outfit to wear for fun once?

  90. I read about a similar evening that 2 couples did a few years ago and thought it was an original way to just have fun and not take things so seriously. Going to a Goodwill, Salvation Army, Value Village, etc...just gives you more "eras" to pull from. We had a Tiki party one year and told everyone they needed to wear Hawaiian shirts or they could not come in, so we stocked up on what we could find and those stores came in handy! Happy you had a great night you, plain and simple :)

  92. You negative ppl need to get a life. I shop at Goodwill/Thrift Stores for brand name fashions. But I do not see these two as downing me because of it. They are just having fun after a long week of working, parenting and housekeeping.

  94. My husband and I are regular thrift store shoppers and have been both in the days of barely making it and doing fine financially but appreciating a deal and having fun browsing..we would totally do this, right down to the fake names.

  96. Good Job, communication, Fun, laughter and date night are definitely imperative to marriage. We have always done date night not every week because our schedules don't always match but close to it. If we missed a date night we would make it up when our schedules matched like do a date breakfast or do a picnic in the middle of the day. Been married 18 years and counting here.

  97. I think this sounds like a great time. My husband and I love thrift stores, flea markets, etc. Most of what we have is secondhand or a treasure we found in our travels.

This article is not to make fun of people who shop at Goodwill. I do so because I like deals, unique finds and the hunt is always fun.

  99. They put God first in their lives and that is the most important thing of all, not any of these comments. They are doing what makes them happy and with no intentions of hurting or offending anyone else. What they have come up with for their date night is wonderful for them and may be so for someone else, they just thought they would share this wonderful idea in the event someone else may enjoy the same fun date night that they are having. Does it really matter where they are shopping? I agree, me personally wouldn't shop at Goodwill, the CEO's make the majority of the money, way too much, and the pricing of the items in the store has made it that even those with lower incomes can not even afford to go there any more. Some things are even priced higher than if it were new! I am sure there are cheaper places in your area you could shop if you desired to do so. Don't target one couple for their choice in what they did to have a successful date night and wanting to share it with others in the event they may like the idea and want to do it too. If you don't like it, don't leave a negative comment, just move on. For me, God Bless them and may they live a happy, God filled life.
